Surely the last couple of stages of head bolt tightening are by angle, so the torque wrench accuracy wouldn't have made a big impact anyway?




That was my view also Kevin, but I was worried that if by using the the extra leverage the torque value had increased on the initial 25Nm tighten, then the subsequent 90 + 90 + 90 + 15 deg might have taken the stress levels beyond the bolts tolerance and perhaps caused some of the bolts to subsequently shear?
Another thought that has suddenly crept in was, would the reduction in Head depth caused by two skims have caused the bolts to bottom out in their bores ???   
Its all conjecture until the head is removed, I guess im just trying to convince myself that i'm not responsible for causing the last failure :-\ :-[
