Power Steering Pump
« on: 26 September 2013, 20:28:51 »

I recently bought a replacement power steering pump off a member for my 2001 2.6 estate along with a few other items. I quickly realised that it looked different from my one fitted but to be honest I quickly forgot about until I need to fit it as mine has squealing bearings.

I had the original old pump that I swapped 2 years agoas I bought it with a failed pump. The one off the car has an Opel sticker and the number 90538732 on it however the replacement I got that was off an omega has a sticker saying Societe Du Groupe Usine De Marignier no 7691955313 on it.

The mountings appear the same but the feed tube is on the side and not the front!!

My question I'd will this fit or do I need another one!!

My understanding is that the later pumps will fit the early cars, but they need the later pipework too.

Is the body of the pump alloy or cast iron ? Afaik the 2.5/3.0 had a cast iron version and the 2.6/3.2 had the alloy version.

I would post a photo up but only have my mobile 3G so can't at the minute.

The old one is black cast and the new one has what appears I be a aluminium body.

Ref the pipes I can't see it being a issue as the main pipe out is in the same position, the only difference is the location of the feed pipe which is at the side rather then the top!

I just don't want to spend hours changing it for no reason. Oh and is it dextron 2 for the power steering as I can't remember!

Well my bearings in my pump have sounded worse this week so I'm gonna have to take a risk and hope this pump fits ok!

The replacement pump has been cleaned, two bottles of dextron 2 purchased, two foot of hose purchased (just in case), new jubilee clips, two tins of carb spray and a large pack of kitchen roll to mop up with!!

Cancelled all plans for tomorrow and fingers crossed everything goes ok!!....if I've forgotten anything let me know lol

Just replaced the one on my 2.6, simple enough to do as per the guide though I never took any of the inlets off. Biggest problem was that I really needed a short extension bar as the one I originally used put the torque wrench tight up against the aircon pipes.

When I removed the front pipe I had an plastic vessel (an old clover tub!) to catch the fluid, I then wrapped the pipe end with a clean rag to stop it dripping everywhere, you can move this pipe towards the radiator and hook it out of the way then.

When refitting the replacement pump I loosend off the bolt securing the aircon pipe bracket to aid locating the pump, once fitted and the rear pipe reattached I refilled the reservoir with fresh fluid and manually rotated the pump until fluid started to appear at the front pipe fitting, reattached the front pipe (remember the washers) and reassmbled everything. started the engine, topped up the system, stopped the engine and removed the dirty fluid from the reservoir and replaced it with fresh. I then started the engine and moved the steering wheel lock to lock, removed and replaced the fluid and repeated this process until the fluid was constantly clean.

Should add, I did the above with the front wheels off the ground and took it for a drive afterwards to ensure there was no leaks.

Hope that helps.

Well this isn't as simple as it sounds. Fitted the new style pump and fed hoses ok by turning the power steering reservoir around a little. Come to connect the other hose and it pours out fluid just by turning the pump by hand. On closer inspection I found that the valve in the pumps are different so swapped from old pump to the new but the connector is different and doesn't tighten fully up so still leaks. Don't know what others did to remedy this but I think I'm gonna have to swap it back over!!

I think the answer is to fit the correct pump - as in the same model as the original.
