As far as custom ROM's go, I tend to stick to Samsung based ROM's and I'd recommend OmegaROM as a good starting point as you dictate what the default system apps will be (eg, Facebook, etc) rather than your service provider (in other words, no useless bloatware taking up space).

You can also repartition the internal SD card to regain up to 3GB of internal storage dependant on system configuration, but we're probably better off saving that one for another day.

Yes it does Andy, it's the only way to get a custom ROM on.

You can remove root afterwards, although this would disable certain inbuilt functionality within the ROM itself (eg, call recording, call blocking, etc).

Andyroid - a few questions I haven't managed to find the answers to through reading the OmegaROM website.

Q1 First (possibly silly) question... I use linux. I have various distros installed on various PCs and laptops. Most are set up with me (andy) as a normal user. When I want to install software I log in as root (or use su or sudo) then revert back to a normal user afterwards.
Does a rooted Android phone work like this? or does it run with root privileges all the time?

Q2 - how can I tell if an S3 is rooted?

Q3 - is the S3 I bought off you still rooted?

Q4 - does installing a stock ROM revert the phone to 'not rooted'?

Works in pretty much the same way, except you don't have to login/logout as a different user.
If an app wants root access, SuperUser (su) will bring up a dialogue box asking the user if root access is allowed or not.

CPU-Z from the Play store will give you all the system info you need.

No, It was reset to factory as per your request.

Q4 - does installing a stock ROM revert the phone to 'not rooted'?

Yes, however it does not reset the hidden binary counter that Samsung use to find out if you have been playing with it.
To reset the hidden counter, you need Triangle Away and SuperSU Pro

They seem to think Orange have something different in place which is prohibiting the device being rooted.
