I've been watching the latest political shenanigans from Washington and it's looking like the Republicans have backed themselves into a corner regarding a deal on the Federal Government's budget and raising the debt ceiling. 

I'm sure that they will thrash out some sort of deal before midnight tonight even if they just kick the can down the road for a few months.  The latest I heard of is a funding deal until January and raising the debt ceiling until February.    The crazy thing is that the currently debt ceiling was actually met back in May and the US Treasury have been paying the bills using 'extraordinary measures' which after tomorrow they will no longer be able to use.  So they have had 6 months or so to sort it out and a few hours before the deadline they are still haggling! and we think our lot are bad!! 

One thing's for sure, if they don't come to an agreement today and the US government starts to default, then the financial crisis's of the last few years will look like a walk in the park!!

Obamas administration of the U.S. economy is similar to Labour here.They keep spending money the country doesn't have,and just keep raising the debt ceiling with no thought for the consquences in the future. They elected their version of Tony Blair (plenty of style but no substance) and are now reaping the reward for it.
I can understand that the republicans are enraged about him wanting to raise the debt ceiling yet again,but having said that, they all need to climb down a bot and come to a compromise - quickly.

I think it's a bit simplistic to blame Obama and the Democrats as the debt ceiling has been raised regularly over the years regardless of who is in The White House....

Absolutely Albs, but in the meantime they really need to raise that limit as they have $120 billion worth of debt to refinance on Thursday, which will be OK if the existing bondholders agree to roll over the debt, but if they want their money back then the shit will hit the fan!! 

They could always sell Alaska to the Russians and Hawaii to the Chinese!!

It still has to be passed by The House, although this is expected to happen.  As said they've kicked the can down the road!
