Temp gauge

I've noticed that my temp gauge is slow to move first thing.
After driving around for an hour, and driving it hard to encourage it rise it was still sat on the line between 80 and 0. It only rose to 90 once I was parked and let it idle for 5 mins.

I also went to my local GFS to buy some hydraulic vaulve treatment and when I opened the oil filler there was smoke coming out of it.

Is my car cooling itself properly or do I need a new thermostat?

Sounds like you need a new stat :-\

Easy way to test... start car from cold and hold the top radiator hose...

If after ten minutes or so it is still luke warm then stat is toast. When working correctly, you should get a sudden rush of hot water as it opens :y

Smoke out of the filler or dipstick hole is usually a sign that the breather tubes need a cleanout :y

Bit of a thread hijack, but mines the same so had diagnosed that the stat was knackered. Having looked at the 'How To' guide on here I'm a bit concerned it's beyond my (rather low) skill level!

How much should I expect to pay at an Indy for a stat change? Also, having looked at the work involved, it is worth getting them to do the cam gaskets as precautionary maintenance whilst the plenum and inlet is off?

Whilst its *always" worthwhile to clean the breathers often, its normal to get smoke from the oil filler when the engine is hot.

Its about £55 for a genuine part at trade price, worth having the transfer pipe as a spare for sake of a tenner, plus £20 of Red antifreeze.

If the camcover gaskets are OK, no need to change, esp as any indy will fit pattern ones that will last weeks, and besides, I doubt any indy (or dealer) could do the job satisfactorily.

Ok, sounds like sensible advice ref the cam covers. What's the stat? Two hours labour?

Always takes me longer, due to one bolt I always have trouble getting back in, yet everyone else seems to not have any real issue with it. So 2-3hrs sounds about right.
