have you tried here ??

http://www.whattowcar.com

Enter the details of the car and van and it gives an idea of the suitability ... I just did a rough check and the BMW seems ok ...  (omega is not too shabby either ...  :) )

After buying one, try a Discovery 2, a lot of car for the money and drives quite well

I have a TD5 auto with SLS and ACE

I run a Jeep Grand Cherokee, the 2.7 version, and use it as an everyday car for work, not just commuting, that will certainly tow your caravan...... :y :y

This is what Caravan Clubs matching service says for the 2.9 manual  Estate 2005 Kerbweight ratio: 91%
The caravan's laden weight is close to the car's kerb weight, increasing the risk of stability concerns. This outfit should not be driven by novice towers, . Note that a small increase in ratio (to perhaps 90%) is acceptable if all other criteria are passed.
This outfit combination is a good match. Towing limit ratio: 83%
The caravan's laden weight is within the car's stated towing limit, and therefore meets legal limitations.
This outfit combination is a good match. Gross train weight ratio: 94%
We do not have a gross train weight figure for this car. There is a small risk of the car’s GTW being exceeded if both car and caravan are heavily laden, as some car makers define GTW as less than the sum of the car and the caravan’s fully laden weights. However, we judge this outfit unlikely to suffer this problem. To be absolutely sure of not exceeding this legal limit, though, check the car’s GTW suitability by referring to the retailer or maker (or the weight plate on the car, if available).
This outfit combination could be a match. Nose weight ratio: 111%
If car nose weight is listed as ‘unknown’, then check with the retailer, maker or in the handbook that the car’s nose weight is sufficient. If a nose weight figure is listed, it may be hard to load the caravan (especially a twin axle) to give acceptable car and adequate caravan nose weight. Aim for 5-7% of the caravan’s actual laden weight without overloading the car or the caravan’s front axle/tyres.
This outfit combination is a good match. BHP per ton : 52
The car’s engine power should be fine to safely tow this caravan.
B+E Licence required
The maximum combined weight of this car and caravan car gross vehicle weight + caravan MTPLM) are over 3500kg, which means you need to have a category B+E driving licence. If you obtained your standard car driving licence before 1st January 1997, you already have this – if not you will need to take a B+E test to legally drive this outfit.Bit above 85% recomended kerb weight  ratio but possibly OK if you dont overload van has 180kg user payload so if you reduce that by carrying extras like awnings in car should come in under the 90% plus its twin axle so can help with stability your choice at the end of the day.

Briefly, but the recovery truck should be equipped with a tow bar so should be able to take over.

The truck will cope, but will the breakdown cover? ;D

Don't discount a 4x4, I tow an Elddis crusader storm twin axle when I bought it I thought one of the Mig's would pull it & they probably would have, but stopping the outfit would have been another matter altogether. I looked at various 4x4s which had either been abused or covered mega miles ,eventually found a 1 owner 25,000 mile Hyundai Terracan only cost me £5450.00 ( was advertised at £6500.00) .Have covered over 12,000 miles in it in about 18 months comfortable & reliable, up to 38mpg solo & 27mpg when towing, which is good for a 2.9 turbo diesel .

Good luck with your search, Monaro as a "fun car" sounds good to me, thinking of moving up to a V8 of some kind myself..
