It is supply and demand. In most industries there are a small number of skilled and talented people that are the movers and shakers that earn a lot. In the entertainment businesses it is largely the faces in front of people. Actors / actresses / pop singers / sporting personalities etc., etc.

Sport is like many other competitive areas of life, you are good enough or not with no where to hide if you don't make the grade.
