Vinyl Sheet Flooring (Lino) on kitchen walls?
« on: 09 May 2014, 17:59:07 »

I've just bought a pallet of 4ft wide x 7ft (ish)off-cuts of lino... (about 60 rolls for 8 quid  ;) )

There's enough of a particularly nice pattern of an off-white tile effect to cover the wall of my kitchen + enough of a sparkly black effect for the bathroom walls + floor.

so...
The plan is to glue them to 9mm sheets of ply with bostik (? or something else? ) then fasten the ply to the walls with construction adhesive - perhaps, in the bathroom, with 50mm expanded polystyrene insulation behind, with battens.
I plan on sealing the gaps with flexible sealer - which I have to match the "grout" lines in the black - which was how the wet room floor was sealed at my mums.

Is this idea do-able?

I don't do tiling or wallpaper, so it's got to be panels of some type.
I *was* going to go with 8x4 sheets of plastic cladding (at 30 quid a sheet) but it's only available in white at that price - nearer 50 quid a sheet in black.

it's not going near the cooker!

Why not stick it straight on the walls with some special primer / glue adhesive?

Fairly sure they do this on boats / yachts.

weight, mainly - holding it in place til the glue sets

Plus, that sounds too much like wallpapering  :( :( :(

Paste it upside down, then just hold the bottom.

LOL  :D :D :D

Last time I wallpapered, I pasted it to a 6mm hardboard sheet, then nailed the sheets up...

Same thing now, really

I'm with zirk - wallpapering isn't a dirty word!
If you choose your adhesive correctly, no need to wait, there are almost "instant-grab" impact adhesives around, and some also allow a short manoeuvring time before it holds fast.
The benefits that I see are that you can cut and fit the covering exactly to size and shape whilst it is dry, then apply the adhesive and position it exactly - job done!
There will be adhesive experts on here to help you to choose correctly, I'm sure......

I just detest getting paste all over my hands, then struggling with a damp piece of paper, then it falling and getting in my hair.

Then paste on the front of the paper, ends up leaving dirty patches. then it won't line up straight cos it's stretched.
And bubbles. and creases.

By the time I've put up one piece, I'm ready for a pint - and I always end up p**sed up iin the pub.

Then people start making comments about the "paste" in my hair...

I can imagine those comments - reminds me of an old joke, too rude for here!
If what you are putting up is as stiff as I remember lino to be, it won't flop all over the place or show dirty patches and if you wear surgical vinyl gloves YOU won't be stuck-up, so surely it's worth a try, rather than the extra expense of using panels and the effort in cutting them to size as well?

The panels are only about 6 quid a go - cheaper than wallpaper!, and cutting isn't a problem.

I've got the pantry to do, so will try straight to the wall in there - PVC primer first tho, I think.
It's bare brick, so no plaster to damage if it has to come down (or comes down itself  ::) )
