Dixons Carphone Warehouse deal
« on: 15 May 2014, 12:16:46 »

I get the logic but just wonder how many people will say I need a new fridge better go to Dixons Carphone Warehouse and get one that connects to the Internet so that it knows what to order as we get low on stuff?

Do people(and will people) increasingly use their mobile handest to control everything in their house and life? I ask that as someone who quite likes old fashioned on off switches that don't fail.

Nice name for the new company. I wonder how long it will be before it is just Dixons!!

Personally I'd quite like a 'smart' house - I've been looking at the Lightwave RF (English designed, English made AFAIK, right round the corner from where Amy's dad works) stuff to add per-room heating control, lighting control, etc etc.

But I wouldn't be off to Dixons to get it.

While we're at it, I've always wondered why Carphone Warehouse stayed as "Carphone Warehouse" - when was the last time you saw someone buy a "Carphone"?

Can I get a vacuum cleaner that will clean up by itself? Or a cooker that will make my tea?

Hmm. Time to start cladding my house with lead, perhaps? ;)

On a more serious note, if you're interested in smart heating, it might be worth watching this:

http://opentrv.org.uk/

I'm working on a bit of code to contribute to the project. It aims to solve the 2 problems with any home automation kit available retail today:

1) It all uses closed standards and none of it interoperates with anybody else's kit.

2) It's all vastly overpriced.

Nothing wrong with that at all. But, as she works 12 hours a day, I doubt it will happen.

The same day they bought a 'state of the art' 8 track. :)

you can get a vacuum robot which will hoover around whilst you are out and return to its docking station. My son has one but his wife is now at home so I think it is rarely used. Bit naff really but picked up crumbs ok but that was about all. You can get a lawnmower on similar principle but with boundary markers'.
