Crankshaft oil seal problem help needed please
« on: 20 May 2014, 06:38:50 »

I went to VX and asked for the oil seal that is just behind the crankshaft pulley and I  was given part 90501720. It did not fit and now I need a new one because it is now  damaged trying to get it to fit. Omega 2.2 petrol manual 2003.

Is this the correct part 90501720?

I need to now ASAP so I can order the correct new one from VX.

Thanks

Why are you so insistent on buying it from Vauxhall? It's a bought in part.
There will be a number on the original seal, take that or the seal to your local bearing supplier and buy it from them. They won't care what it's for, as this sort of part is normally specified by the relevant sizes.
It is likely to be much cheaper too.

I was told to replace with a VX seal. My old seal dosn't have a part number on it so maybe it was not a VX part.

I wanted to make sure that the new seal was correct, because all the videos that I have seen don't seem to have the same problem getting the new seal over the crankshaft like I have.

I wonder if they have given you the seal for the later chain driven 2.2 as used in the Vectra and Astra.

Do a quick measure if you can as I think the dimensions should be:

Inner Dia.: 31.00mm, Outer Dia.: 50.00mm, Thickn.: 8.00mm

It should be the same as the one used on the X20XE

Yes correct part number. Why did it not fit?

Andy

Don't know.

I lubricated the lips around the inside edge and the outer edge with new oil, but it just wouldn't go over the ledge of the crankshaft properly. I tried and tried and tried by hand but it just wouldn't stretch. Come the end I tried a proper install tool to fit the seal but the seal was so tight it just stretched over the ledge of the crankshaft and distorted.

I have ordered another new VX seal from a different place. Here is a photo of the end resort. https://www.flickr.com/photos/53447058@N05/14229479802/

Any help/advice with the next new seal would be appreciated.

Thanks

Are the crankshaft seals really difficult to fit or is it something that I'm doing wrong?

The video's that I've seen, show them go on without too much trouble.

Thanks

New seal arrived today, so I thought I would try and fit it using exactly the same method I used the first time, just to see if it was the seal or me at fault.
The seal lips went over the ledge of the crankshaft almost straight away. I then repeated the same 3 more times before fully fitting it just to prove to myself that I wasn't going mad. The first one must have been a dodgy seal because it wouldn't fit for love or money. I didn't have any problem with the second seal. I did notice that the first new seals packaging had been resealed at some point but the part number is the correct one.

Anyway, the seals finally done.  :y All I have to do now is fit the cambelt in the morning refill the oil and coolant and wash and fit the replacement rear bumper and she will finally be on the road.  :y

Thank you all for your help and advice.  :y
