Are these coolers any good?

What make do you use and do you have any recommendations?

Years ago we bought a similar one but just cigar lighter powered.

Getting foodstuffs like ice cream home in Spain can be a challenge.

I find ours works just as well with freezer packs in and no electric connection but it reduces the space available. Talking of which, they work better without loads of air space.

What they don't do very well is to reduce the temperature of things e.g. tins of beer.

I would say go for it.

Thermo electric coolers offer limited cooling (start with cold items you want to keep cold) and use a lot of power. So ok for items that start cold and while your driving.

I have a separate battery in the boot of the estate charged while driving to keep mine going when stopped 

If I needed to use it a lot I would get one of these:

They use a compressor and so much less power and far greater cooling capacity.

I've got a similar one and it's not that great it bearly gets cold enough

I use a  WAECO cooler in the truck, keeps the drinks cold as i don't have the luxury of a built in fridge unlike some.

I have a couple of fridges - 1 large for picnics 40L (Halfords) (£70)  and 1 small 22L (Camping Shop - £35) for short trips to take bits and pieces from home fridge to use up.

Large one takes a lot of boot space. Small one is great as fits in around general luggage.

Obviously works best on trips where you do not stop off too often and unload pdq when you arrive. Cool is with mains power for a short time before putting in car on 12v. I think they are good value - especially small one

For that price you can buy a slimline 60-65 litre Bosch fridge or freezer and an inverter, so you have household capacity and much lower running costs. Did that on the boat and it was actually pretty good on consumption. Do take up a bit of space though

I ve got one that's similar and I find its rubbish
its heavy and its just a fan in the top that dosnt seam to do much.

I've got a 41 litre Coleman camping fridge the runs off 230v, 12v or gas and have always found it to be very good. It had no problems in making ice cubes when I used it with gas in the south of France.

It has always proved its worth at Christmas as the booze / mixers fridge you just have to be careful that the tins / bottles resting against the cooling area aren't in there too long or the contents will freeze.

Only problem I have now with it is that the top load door seal is past its best, so I'm going to have to find some sort of replacement, which looks like it could be challenging.

Sounds like I will be better off sticking with the old method, cool packs and the trusty cool box and saving some money.  But on the other hand I am now looking at mini camping fridges for the boot. LOL.  Don't know how well it would do on the move though. 

Rods2, I have seen some universal fridge door seals. Might be worth a look at, to fix yours.
