Bank holidays
« on: 26 May 2014, 10:14:35 »

I thought the reason why they are bank holidays was cause banks don't open.

On way to work I see this ;D

That's the way society has gone. To the detriment of society IHMO.

Sunday used to be a rest day in the UK (irrespective of religious beliefs), now its a normal working day for many. Why do shops need to be open on Sunday? Are we too thick/stupid/lazy/incompetent to buy what we need for the weekend in the week, or on Saturday?

Here in deepest Brackley, people take the piss at our local DIY shop - an old school hardware store, where the staff are all in dustcoats and know their products - because it closes at lunchtime on Saturday, and opens again on Monday. They close for lunch daily, and half day Wednesday (anyone over the age of 35 will be very familiar with these sort of opening patterns). Quaint, but I have massive respect for them for doing so.

Well that is something else. A bank open on a bank holiday!! :o :o

Anyone living in or visiting Spain(except the tourist areas) will pretty much know the opening style of shops. Very similar to your hardware shop.

I have mixed feelings about it.

Yes it is great being able to shop "out of hours" but what happened to families just living and enjoying life. I remember once going to ASDA in the middle of the night for medicine for an elderly relative. There was a man and a five year old shopping at 4 in the morning!!

After 4.5 years of shift work, were bank holidays mean nothing. Except all of them being added to my holiday allowance  :D

I'm now doing standard 9-5, it's great as I've forgotten when they are. Nice surprise when I find out they are near  :)

I agree 100%

I'm not at all religious, but we need a day for friends and families, for eating, or for just doing nothing, or maybe going to the pub or whatever. or maybe fixing Omegas  ::)

I love France on Sundays, bread/cake shops open till late morning, and then that's it except for restaurants. If you're not on a motorway you may even have a problem filling the car up.

When I was a small boy (um, a while ago) living in post-war East London, there was a local provisions/grocery shop owned by Jews. Apart from general low level vandalism and anti-Semitic graffiti, which I at that age could not understand why happened, the antipathy towards them magically disappeared on Sundays, when THEY were open and no other shops were!

They are a good little shop TBH, though does seem odd that they close lunchtime on Saturday, but I'd rather everywhere did, rather than we lose Saturdays and Sundays to normal work days. Hence, respect for that.

Bit of a bummer if you need a washer on a Saturday afternoon though ;D

Esp, as, unlike Reading, the next nearest hardware place is over 10 miles away.  That used to really screw me up when I first moved here, but I tend to be more organised now (well, almost :P)

We have a great old fashioned hardware store in Sandhurst, but it is open all day Saturday and Sunday mornings. Best of both worlds. :y :y :y

If they haven't got that 3/8" Whitworth left handed widget in stock, then out come the catalogs to see if they can get you one. :y :y :y

They are more expensive on many things, but not all, on some things they are cheaper than the faceless multiples, but well worth using and I do so regularly as their range of stock and quality of service, :y :y :y shows how non-existent it is at the multiples. :( :( :(

We also have opposite them have an excellent decorating shop, that is primarily aimed at the trade, but are happy to serve anyone. Again there are many specialised decorators tools and supplies, that are not generally available elsewhere. :y :y :y

We are very lucky to have these shops. there are also several interesting shops in an old Victorian parade along the A30, including a couple with ethnic supplies, where if you like homemade Indian cooking like I do you can get bulk supplies of ingredients at very reasonable prices. :y :y :y

With Co-Op, Tesco, M&S, Waitrose, Aldi and Lidl close by we also have a good range of multiples to choose from for everyday items.

Normal Monday train service here, so if today was a rostered working day (like mine was), you worked your normal 'booked' Monday.

Got home 'bout an hour ago from an early afternoon shift :y

Same as what I had. If shifted on, you worked it. :)

Had its benifits, no traffic at commute times and an empty office  :D
