Another problem
« on: 16 June 2014, 18:56:15 »

I am under instruction to keep and repair the Omega and now another problem has in all probability reared its head.Last week whilst checking levels etc. I noticed that the coolant level was pretty low, with all the rain of late I couldn't tell whether this was the result of a leak or what so I topped it up with what I had to hand[the cheapo blue anti-freeze].Yesterday whilst checking the level to see if had dropped I found some gunge in the header tank.I've checked the oil level and that's fine with no sign of water,so assuming the gunge is a result of oil cooler letting go.Before I condemn it is there any way this can be tested?Reason for asking is that I've read elsewhere that mixing certain anti-freeze types will also produce this kind of symptom and I don't know what was in it originally. It didn't have any really detectable colour, but it must have had something in it as it's shown no sign of freezing up over the past two winters.Any thoughts?Assuming it to be oil cooler where do I get one from-dealer only or what?Any idea of prices?I assume if they can't be tested in some way then buying used is a gamble at best or a total waste of time/money at worst.Temp.gauge has never registered above 95 and when it hits that figure fans cut in until it registers just under 90[88ish?]All water pipes are hot and rad is uniformly hot top to bottom and side to side if any of that helps.

Is there any sign of oil in the coolant. It normally forms as waxy globules if that makes sense

I would drain it, fill with water and repeat a couple of times.

Then refill with 5 litres of red antifreeze, topped off with distilled water.

See how that holds up and go from there :y

If it were the oil cooler, your header tank would be a brown muddy tank of slurry by now :y

There's only a small amount of the gunge to be seen-a sort of grey/brown colour the tank certainly isn't full of it and there's no oily film on surface of coolant[if that would be in evidence]but then the car has only covered about 25 miles since being topped up with the blue stuff. Will give the flush idea a go as I don't really have anything to lose do I?

Certainly worth Taxi Al's flush :y

Don't be tempted to run it on just water, even for a day, as that will do it no favours.

Was thinking, drain, refill with water, upto temp, drain, refill with water, upto temp, drain, add coolant neat, then too off with distilled water...

Over the course of about an hour, no driving involved :y

Don't forget, climate/heater controls on hot for both sides :y
