Who hit the self destruct button??
« on: 19 July 2014, 11:08:25 »

Following on from this - http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=124906.0

I haven't managed to fix the HBV yet so am checking the header tank daily. I check this morning and it's gunked full of oil. That'll be the oil cooler knackered.

Also noticed the cam covers are weeping, and also know my thermostat is stuck open.

Need a 4 wheel alignment as she's tramlining and got uneven tyre wear.

And the gearbox needs a fluid flush as it's occasionally flaring and doing some odd things.

FFS! I'm beginning to wonder if it's all worth it on a £1k car.

Just needed to get that off my chest!

£1k, be lucky to get that  ;D

These old barges cost more to run than they are worth, however they are damn site cheaper and more comfy than modern cars

I know - I'm trying to be optimistic as valuing it lower in my mind makes it even less worth while doing the work. Especially when I've been offered a very good deal on a V8...

What do you mean by a 'flare' on the gearbox...?

i have spent best part of 2k on mine in the last 3 months, i dont think of its value but dwell more on what a lovely ride it is and how long i plan to keep it. even with that and what i paid you would have to spend 25k on a merc c class to equall it  :y

All the engine jobs can be done at the same time tho,it may sound alot tho,but its not, when you start prepping a 4x4 to go off road ,raising the body, suspension, changing wheels, fitting winches etc then thats alot more than changing cam covers, thermostat and oil cooler on a mig,and if you change the car,how do you know your not buying something that needs alot more work than the car you have now .....

First thing is to stop using the car until the oil cooler is fixed.
If you don't then you might as well give the car away, especially with the other issues stacking up :-\

No, Jeep Grand Cherry 4.7. It's very tempting as if we get snow or floods where I live, we're knackered.

I'll price up all the work on the Mig and see from there. Doesn't help that it's MOT & tax time too! I'm happy it'll pass no issues though.
Decisions decisions.

Looking at your list it won't pass...

Uneven tyre wear means knackered wishbone bushes, which in turn is likely a failure, even more so if the tyres are borderline.
Cam cover leaks will cause misfire issues (if they haven't already) which will kill the emissions.
Running the engine with mayonnaise instead of coolant will cook it in pretty short order, so it might not get to the MoT place. And from experience, MoT testers take a pretty dim view of fluids pouring off an engine during the test ::)

If you like the car, and have the space, then SORN it when the tax runs out, and start collecting parts :y

Everything on the list is fixable, and most of it should be viewed as long term service items... but your car seems to have had almost all the common Omega issues happen all at once. Start with the oil cooler then work down the engine to the suspension

Oh balls. I do hate it when people come on here and talk complete sense.. >:(

The evil side of me wants to tidy it up, flush the oil out best I can and sell it to a 'Best price M8' mug on gumtree  ;D
