Screen needs replacing - help please
« on: 05 November 2014, 15:17:29 »

Thoughts, gentlemen and ladies....

Still working on the Old Girl, trying to get her Mot'd as documented elsewhere, but last night saw a thin crack at the base of the screen. AHH!!  :'( Presuming this is an MoT failure, but this got me thinking.... There is a large scab of rust where the roof meets the screen top. And the best way of getting this sorted properly is to take the screen out, treat and cure the rust, repaint, then refit the screen. So I'm seeing this unfortunate damage as a blessing in disguise.

Question is... what's my options? Could I get an Autoglass man to pop the screen out, then later in the week, after the rust's done, get the new screen in? Appreciate any feedback from anyone who's had similar issue, or perhaps fits windows for a living!?  :y

I haven't seen them rust round the screen, unless someones damaged it putting a screen in previously :-\ . Maybe wait till it's back on the road and look at what windscreen cover you have on the insurance.

Could I get an Autoglass man.....

Don't even think about the likes of Autoglass if your going to pay for it yourself, unless you're prepared to remortgage!  ::)

A decent indy windscreen place should charge about £140, but as Omegod said look at the insurance route first.  :y

Mot info here - http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_830.htm

Seen a few now where rust has cracked the screen, normally bottom corners, tell tail sign is white clouding around the area before it goes to crack.

Any rust around the screen area will need sorting, not something the fitter normally does, might put some extra black primer on there if your lucky.

Take the screen out and sort the rust before fitting new, or getting it fitted, your need a T Bar pick and some cutting wire (about a tenner), takes about half an hour to remove and the screen is lighter than you think.  ;)

Right, there's the possibility that I can get me a cheap windscreen from the scrappy, and someone who can get it out. So in theory I'd just need someone to fit the thing.

It's all potential this and possible that currently, but yeah, I'd say someone scratched paint on a previous screen fitting  :'( it's an odd place for it to rust.

Going to ask a mechanic I know if he knows any decent local screen fitters, either via the books or maybe on an evening off, type of thing  :y
