Insulating central heating pipe
« on: 14 December 2014, 17:26:24 »

Made a difference  ;D ....I was a bit surprised tbh....
considering how short the pipe run was....

Before...boiler set at flow temp of 70C.....downstairs rads 65C .... upstairs rads 60C

When plumber put new boiler in, in usual plumber fashion didn't bother to insulate any pipework

All the pipes from the boiler run into a cupboard , which used to house the hot water tank and now has my tools in it...

When I was in the cupboard this morning, trying find summat, I was wondering why I was keeping my tools and other junk nice and warm.

As I had some pipe insulation....and it only took 10mins to insulate about 4/5ft of 22mm pipe (feeds the downstairs rads)  and about 7/8ft of 15mm pipework (feeds the upstairs rads).
I only did the flow pipes .

Rad temp now....67.5/68 downstairs .... 65 upstairs  :)

Pretty much impossible to believe that a short piece of insulation on the primaries can have such a major effect unless they are being run through the ice box of the fridge.  ;D

More worrying is 15mm pipe feeding a rad set!

It is  ;) The cupboard is first room in flat roof part of house, with zero insulation...bathroom is next and thats even colder .... I kid you not when I say, the other morning when it was about -2C outside, Towel rad on plus additional infrared wall heater on, the shower had been on for about 1min and I had a hard job to see my hand in front of my face, with the steam in the bathroom....that's a tad ice box temp  :( I am looking at getting the flat roof extension cavity wall insulated....but guess theres sod all I can do about no insulation in the flat roof...apart from ripping the plasterboard down.... :-\

Re the 15mm pipe to feed the upstairs rads.....that's always been there...but probably nowt to worry about as the rads upstairs are quite small and only 3 of them....downstairs theres 5 rads and in the living room and dining room the rads are big! .... about 2.5m long!
