What happens when....

The battery in yer remote goes flat.......ok it wont open the central locking......but as far as i know thats about it....then if you use the key to open the doors, the alarm will go off but shut up as soon as you put the key in the ign....and everything else okay dokie.....

Just been outside in neighbours garage....dunno why havent had me dinner yet!  ;D

He's got a merc c250 diesel........same as the one i had but mine was 2.2 (his is 2.5) ..... battery seems to be iffy in his remote...ie when you press the buttons the led lights dimly....

Difference between omega and merc when yer remote battery goes flat.......the merc wont start!!

Omega keys have a blade.....merc doesnt...it has a stubby plastic bit that you shove in a slot.....and turn.......problem is with a flat battery in the key....it carnt commicate via infrared to let the merc know the right key is in the slot!!

He's not going anywhere until he gets the battery changed!

Mad innit......for the sake of a quid battery......merc is dead!!

And hes only got the one key  ;D ;D

Well that is a bit daft isn't it...

I always thought that on the later Merc keys the blade was in the side of the key and had to be slid out?

One manufacturers (could be F*rd can't remember) keys recharge when you put it in the ignition.

Simple idea really.

On the merc key there is a small switch at the top. Slide that an a key blade that unlocks the passenger door. There may be a plastic cover over the key hole on the door though.

We have these keys in our new vans and when the battery goes dead the key has to be sent back to be reprogrammed.  It's a real pain in the ar*e.  Even if you get into the car you won't be able to start it as the key needs power to stay in the ignition (has some sort of infra red sensor which locks it into the ignition).

Given the average life of a rechargeable battery is about 5 years then thats even worse........as the key will be TOTALLY useless then!

Thats typical Merc, crap software.

The same often needs doing following a battery disconnect!

There is.....but thats only to unlock the doors........the remote/ign key still needs power to tell the merc the right key is in the ign  ;)

I think Mercedes are probably being very clever with this type of key.  I wonder how much they charge at the stealers to reprogram it if you're out of warranty?  Nice little money spinner me thinks.  Just to add - some of the vans keys which have been in for a reprogram were only 4-6 months old!

Never had that prob on my merc.....

But what i miss on the omega........is the auto start the merc had.......u just had to turn the key to start and let go.....it would carry on turning the engine over until it started  8-) (well for 10 secs it would then gave up)

Never had the auto start in the vans unfortunately - that's cool.  To be fair I can't fault the Mercs - love them apart from the dodgy turbos on the old vans - no trouble with the new ones though.

Land Rover keys recharge themselves while you are driving.

It's all a real hassle but, these cars/vans just dont get stolen and that's the point of the exercise.
