« on: 06 March 2015, 20:46:11 »

Hi all of on me holibobs in June to Spain, Question is about car hire i will need a car as my cousin who i intend visiting lives about an hour away from the airport. Now i have visited the car hire sites and all are about the same for a mid range motor but the excess is in the region of 1200 euros is this right. Is there easier/cheaper ways of going about it.

Thanks in advance Steve.

Pay extra for Collision Damage Waiver/Excess Waiver or find a company who include it free :y

Which airport are you flying into please? If it is Malaga I may be able to give you some pointers.

Flying into Reus Varche, and James used them last year took excess cover out before i left and still found that at the desk i had to take out another insurance to bring down the excess. Feels like you are paying twice. Iam using Goldstar sistuated within the airport.

CDW will cover the bulk of any incident less an excess. Without it you're liable for the hire car upto it's retail price.

The excess insurance is just that, might cost an extra hundred euros, but it could drop your liability from €1200 down to €50. Ok you might not need it, so the extra €100 might have been better spent on beer, but if you do need it, it will have saved you a small fortune :y

Can you confirm Steve if it is Goldstar, or Goldcar?

I always use Goldcar (I visit Spain and the Canaries 10/12 times a year).

Always take out their full insurance (ignore the CDW, that's a given).  If you get a flat tyre, or a broken window, they'll charge you a fortune.

As always, you will NEED a credit card (not debit card).

Goldcar have always provided me with excellent vehicles, all new (or nearly new) always perfectly clean..... Be prepared for a wait at the check-in desk though.  They tend to be busy!

Apologies Goldcar it is, i did use them back last October and i had taken up CDW offered before i arrived. Thought that would be it and was taken aback when found that i had to take out further cover at the desk as well as the block put on the credit card. Looking to book again and was shocked to see that the excess is 1200 euros. So much more hassle than when i hire in Greece a lot less hassle free there.
