What money does to people.
« on: 03 June 2015, 18:05:08 »

A while back, I posted about one of Christine's relations sadly passing away but he left no will (intestate).
We have had a letter today from the solicitors, explaining that despite all attempts, no will still has not been found, so the rules of intestate are being followed.
This means monies will now be distributed to people who never knew the chap, or even that he existed. Christine stands to inherit a substantial sum. I should add that we did know him and did see him.
However, included with the letter is a 'Wish List' of where he wanted his estate to go. He lists eight people who he wanted to share a stated sum. He also wanted three charities to benefit from the residue after inheritance tax, The RAF Benevolent fund, Brooklands, and one other charity. Tax could also be reclaimed back from HMRC for these charities. Christine is one of the named people. Unfortunately, this list is worthless as it is not signed and witnessed. Ironically, whichever system would have been used, Christine's inheritance figure would be the same.
The letter from the solicitor, hints, if you read between the lines, that you may wish to honour this 'wish list' and give money to the named charities. A form is even supplied, saying you wqould like to honour his wishes.
Now this is the bit the gets my dander right up. Some parties in our family now stand to gain quite a few quid, albeit, not knowing of his existence, never met him etc, etc.
When in conversation with them....the attitude was..'That's his fault, should have made a will' !!!

And for that very reason, I encourage mum to blow the lot on holidays, spa days, and at the races (much to my little bro's annoyance, is he has to go and collect mum and her mates, and they are often in a bit of a state ;D).  I don't think any of my immediate family are that callous, but its all those that come out of the woodwork.

At the end of the day, I don't want mums money. She/dad earnt and saved it, she should enjoy it. All of it.

Very well put, and I agree entirely.

We don't feel guilty, as had he made a will, he wanted Christine  to have some of his money. As I said earlier, its the charities that are losing due to what I call money grabbing bastids not giving a shite.
They say money goes to money, and I have to say the parties I refer to are very, very, very well off. If they honoured his wish list, it would make no difference to Chris, but they would not get a bean, although the charities would.
 Selfish bastids.

Sorry, but I am well mad.

OK, I'd do a deal, we have a holiday together, whilst she is still able to enjoy it. She gets her wish, I get mine, albeit it with a compromise in the middle

Just like TB we as a family used to try and encourage mum to spend the money dad left her on holidays and the like, she always used to come up with objections "no one to go with"and such, then she'd say what would I leave you lot if I spent it.We used to say sod us lot get it spent! As for those who come out of the woodwork,it's not just money that does it.When Maureen died she left no money but a few treasured possesions and I told both her daughters and her granddaughter that if there was anything they wanted they could have it and welcome. However members of Maureens family[sisters]who never came anywhere near her either before or during her illness suddenly decided that she'd always said that they could have this that or the other.I upset the lot of them by telling them where to go!!

Good for you, Baza :y
In our case, Christine and one other cousin in our family were the only ones in close contact with this cousin.
As I said earlier, his wish was Christine and the other cousin should benefit from his estate. And as said, the amount they will receive will be exactly the same whether intestate rules or wish list. That's how the figures work out.
Its just the 'pariahs' that would lose out. And they have made their views well known.

This situation shows just how important it is to make a will, so if you are in a situation to leave others some money, it will go to those you want it to, and not any money grabbing lecher who has even the minimalistic claim to it.

Always brings out the worst in people situations like this, I remember a few years my wife's best friends mother in law passed away, and as it happened they were due to visit us a few days after her death. The day of their visit arrived & before I had a chance to give my condolences to Ian the fellow whose mother had died, he announced that on their way to see us he had popped in to a Land Rover dealership as he could now afford to change his car, how callous is that !!
