« on: 24 November 2015, 12:58:36 »

The lads looking at a 6 inch one for the missus for Christmas.

The only thing she will use it for is downloading and reading books.

Are these any good ?
We was looking at eh paper whites but these are twice the price ?

I have one of the early kindle 3g's from 2011 !!.. and wouldn't be without it. Excellent bit of kit IMHO. Only used for reading books even though it "does" (supposedly) do mp3's and internet, both are done but poorly. Smartphone does those two things way better, but for reading it is brilliant .. light, easy to use and over 50 odd books stored on it .. could put lots more but never seen the need ! Books loaded from computer to kindle in milleseconds when I wish to change them.

Mine looks like this ...

That's the one that SWMBO has. Agreed re using it on the internet - it does it, but it's hard work.
The thing she likes best about it is the fact she can increase the text size to 2 words a line  ;) and read without using glasses

Real question is is it going to get used just for reading books, if so the Kindle white screen,  eInk and battery life are terrific for just that.

If theres a possibility to start browsing, maybe some handy apps from he Play Store, watching films etc, then would a Android Tablet not come onto play, you can download the Kindle App Store from Google, but it wont be the same reading a kindle book outside in the sunlight.

50 quid Kindle vs 50 to 80 notes for Android.

Kindle e-Reader is absolute rubbish at anything other than reading books on.

Tablets (Kindle Fire or otherwise) are absolute rubbish at reading books.

So, depends what you want it for.

Got a kindle fire 7" hd WiFi here, 16gb. No problems, also can be used as an e_reader, and does that well to. :y

I'm with TB here.  The Fire is much better for Internetty stuff, but reading books outdoors in any sort of sunlight is dreadful.

I got the Missus a PaperWhite (Wi-Fi Only).  Didn't see the point in 3G when it can connect through either one of our iPhones as a HotSpot if absolutely necessary (never need to do that yet).  Books transfer in a blink of an eye when at home, can store more books than anybody could read on a fortnight holiday (4GB Storage) and the battery will last that long too!

The PaperWhite is definitely worth the extra few quid. Even in Direct Sunlight, it's just like reading a proper book.
