Saw a Leaf on a recovery truck today. Somebody forgot his extension lead.
The public charging points(at motorway services for instance)often don't work. Which means a recovery to the next nearest. Taking a Leaf from Maidstone services on the M20 to Medway on the M2 was a common job.
This makes me laugh! So, we are told the Motorway network is ready for these stupid cars, and they are not? Why not run an extension lead outside and offer the driver a free coffee, a bed for the night and a waitress to cater for all their needs?
The motorway network isn't the issue, it's the car's 100mile range and recharge times that cause the problem. Neither of these things are going to change without a radical improvement in battery and charging technology, which is what Tesla is hoping to acheive - their cars are effectively R&D. Limited numbers of electric cars mean there isn't really much worth in installing many recharge points on the motorways, in town is a much better use of the money.
The Leaf is best for short trips, especially ones where recharging at each end is possible. If it wasn't for the price, it would be an exceptional commuter car. It is one of the few cases where you can make a direct comparison with a 'proper' car, which is Nissan's Note.
