Windscreen removal
« on: 23 March 2016, 13:24:26 »

I'm in the process of cleaning out the scuttle drains and have noticed surface rusty grot starting to accumulate around the bottom edge of the windscreen, on the horizontal metal body strip which the scuttle affixes to (and the little clips twist into). The screen is starting to delaminate in the corner, with signs of a slight crack starting, so it's fubbarred anyway.

I'd like to take the screen out and clean up and tidy those areas, cut back to metal and repaint.

Is it easy to remove the screen, not worrying about and cracking or damage to the glass?

Once cleaned up a new a new screen can be fitted by the windscreen people, but will calling them out first just to remove incur further costs, when removal might be easy DIY?

Fairly easy once you get into it, you need a T tool and the Wire, about a £10, start from the lower middle, then work upwards taking care on the lower corners, there the ones that will probably crack, once done just lift it out, its lighter than you think.

As for putting it back in, your best bet is to pay some beer money to a local fitter, rather than mess about yourself with sealant, budget for 20 to 40 notes for them to refit.

Thanks for that Zirk - will give it a go. I've got the taups ready, but it's decided to rain this morning. I'll wait for some good weather  :'(

The rubber strip, which is really more of a trim strip tends to be bent out of all shape when you try to replace. Mine's lifting at the corners, sadly, and apparently getting one off a breaker tends to simply have the same issue, it never really bends back properly. Let me know if you find a source of these new, or even find a way of getting a spare one off a scrapper without deformation  :)

Not had a problem removing the trim surround but the plastic trim that this clips to and the windscreen sits against will be scrap.
