What is it with the VAG 1.2 TSI's?
« on: 05 April 2016, 19:00:16 »

Evening guys,

Few months back we had a Audi A3 recovered in with the above engine in. Chain slipped and shagged the valves.

Couple of months after that. Another A3 recovered in. Same engine. Same chain slippage. Same wrecked valves.

Friday a Seat Leon comes in. Same engine. And guess what? This time I've got the fun task of fixing it. I got the head off yesterday. Got to say it's a really nice engine to work on. Bags of room and will be my 4th chain and 3rd head removal at the garage. Few pics below if interested. Note the witness marks on the tops of the Pistons.

However what is it with this engine? I looked on Autogayta and there's no TSB's about this. After speaking to the customer he did say the oil warning light came on (the level warning, not oil pressure) a couple of weeks back but he topped up immediately. So is this dodgy engines or just a case of customers running their cars low on oil and paying the consequences?

Pics of progress:

Very long oil changes and clogged oilpump pickups as a consequence? Then driving it until somethings becomes noticable?

This affects a lot of Nissan engines too, something the Micra is particularly well known for.

Could be Nick. The sumps got to come off to do the chain so I can get a look at it then.

The VAG 1.2 3 cyl engine used to do it too; circa 2002 MY.  It was originally a seat engine I believe that VW aquired?  Total dogsh1t.  Mother had a polo with one in. Never again.  >:(
