I have changed the shower/mixer on the bath along with the waste and overflow and now need to do the wash basin. I've had a delve behind the ped and, even though it's all ancient and full of verdigris and crap, I think everything is just about doable.......except the backnut for the waste. It's right up inside the ped, obviously, with no room at all to get anything in there. It's 2" or 50mm and I can't even find a tool online to do it. Any tips or advice?

The pedestal suppports the sink, but it (sink) is also attached to the wall, either screwed to it or hung on steel brackets. You can see these if you look. You can kick the pedestal away and the sink will hang on these other supports. Then you can get in with a spanner.

Got one of those but no good for such a large nut. Doubt there'd even be room to get that in.
Terry, the basin and ped are not physically secured to anything, it's been a botch job. The ped is sitting on a dollop of silicon sealant, the basin is sat on the ped with loads of the same and stuck to the wall tiles with about half an inch of the same. It's an old basin and I don't want to try and prise it all apart or spend hours removing hardened silicon.
I gave myself an hour to do this job, that's how long the bath took. The best laid plans.........

Stemo, from what you're saying, it sounds like the original installer built up the waste plumbing, then slotted the whole lot into the pedestal and gunked it all together. 

That being the case, it's unlikely that the waste pipe can be gotten out without reversing that procedure. If I were you I'd either live with what you have or take the water supply pipes off the underside of the taps, detach the waste where you can, remove the sink and pedestal and reinstall
From scratch.

I've only fitted half a dozen or so of these, but As others have said, in my experience the sink should screw/bolt to the wall and support its own weight, then do your plumbing. Finally you basically just stand the pedestal in place. They either screw to the floor or are held to the basin with silicone, but either way should be more or less decorative rather than structural.

Been to screwfix to pick up a few bits. Guy showed me a 2" pump spanner in the catalogue which looks like it may do the job if I can get it in. Today I'm going to cut down the 15mm hot and cold copper pipes (I have flexis with isolators to make reconnection easier) remove the trap and a bit of waste pipe and see whats what. I may have to resort to the old trick of tapping the nut around with a hammer and screwdriver to get a start on it. Not really recommended in a confined space, steel hammer and porcelain ped. One slip and.........

Seems to me that by the time you've faffed about trying to do a half arsed job, you could have ripped it all out and reinstalled it all properly!

Do you need the nut? Because you could cut most of the way through it on opposite sides with a Dremel, and knock it off with the chisel. This does require decent access.

 I've probably done 15minutes of plumbing work in the last 45years, so this suggestion is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Done. Managed to get about a sixteenth of a turn with a plumbers wrench. After about half a turn the waste started spinning with it. Bastid 
So, with me under the sink, one arm turning a little bit at a time and the other arm over the top pushing a pair of long nosed pliers into the waste......it came off in no time at all. Well......about fifteen minutes actually. Felt like days and now I can't feel my arms below the elbow
