Does the starter motor have to come off for this? it is difficult to tell if the mounting studs are anchored in the bell housing or in the engine section. It would be useful if it doesn't as it is a pig to get at its top nut without removing the inlet manifold.

Have done a TD gearbox, no need to remove starter that I can remember, also the top stud is a pain, but can be done with some swearing and pain.

Is that the top bolt drivers side behind the ex. down pipe? As it looks as though it needs a 3' extension, which I don't have.

Well it may not have to, but two bolts that go through its mounting have to come out.

Really sorry. Scraped a comb through my grey matter, and don't remember ever removing a starter motor - as you say a couple of bolts came out, maybe that was it, we took them out without really realising what bolts they were, we just keps undoing bolts and wiggling until the bugger came out!

Yep, starter motor bolts have to come out, awkward little buggers.

And TD only has 3 bolts from flexplate to TC, unlike the V6's 6

Well it may not have to, but two bolts that go through its mounting have to come out.

  when I changed my starter motor on a td the top bolt was a nightmare. I had a a flexible extension connected to other bars. my flexible is never been the shape it should have been since. if I remember right I replaced the nut with an over-sized one that had the same thread & cut it so it jammed against the engine so I could just undo the bolt from the gearbox side.

I had no problem with the starter motor bolts, except when I dropped a spanner.
