Are all 2.2s created equal?
« on: 20 January 2017, 09:28:25 »

I know that there are two 'generations' of the v6 fitted to the Omega... X2.5/3.0 and Y2.6/3.2... the obvious differences being dbw throttles and coil packs rather than leads.

I also know that all the 2.0 Omegas have X20 engines in either 8 or 16v form and all with cabled throttles.

But what of the 2.2? Are they all Y22 dbw engines, or are early ones X22?

Yes all the same, there was actually some changes to the 2.0 16V in around 1997.5 when balance shafts were added to improve smoothness along with a  few other minor changes.

 8)

I had my eye on a CDX estate, and with no pictures of the left side of the car the seller described it as the same as the right side, with the odd dent... which I translated to "side stoved in" so didn't bother...

Trouble is, it seems like 85% of all Omegas are autos, so might be a question of buying on condition rather than spec, hence the question ;)

Been digging, and seen suggestion that the 2.2 comes in Y22 and Z22 guises... not the X22/Y22  initially thought :-\

When did they change, what differences, and, does it matter which I look for with a view to my longer term project goal... Z20LEx

The Y22XE and Z22XE were used in the Omega. The difference was the emissions spec., I believe, Not sure if there were any actual differences physically. maybe just engine management, or nothing at all.

The other Z22s (SE, etc.) are completely different 2.2 petrol 4 pots with chain driven cams used in the Vectra, etc. but never in the Omega.

Ok, so the Omega lump is DBW regardless of Y/Z?

That the Vec C Z22 is a completely different beast is no bad thing... the fuel pump makes a dti pump look reliable :D Only frustration is that the chain driven lump won't fit the Omega box, rendering a Saturn blower conversion impossible ::)

Sounds like the Z20LEx should be pretty Omega friendly, which makes the idea viable...  8)

Yep, all Omega 2.2s were DBW.
Ta :y

I see a plan forming... individually, the parts are pretty reasonable too, so looking like a goer, no pun intended :D
