Water pump V6 . . can it be replaced without
« on: 08 October 2016, 14:19:16 »

Looks like I have water pump failure .  Leaking & making a rumbling noise.

Can the pump be replaced without removing cam belt etc?

In other words can I just replace the water pump ?

You can even do it without removing the belt cover. But I'd spend the extra couple minutes taking the cover off for a proper clean up afterwards, and I know I'd drop at least one of the bolts inside it if I left it in place ;D

Take the time to grease the aux belt tensioner pulley while you're in there.

Yes, just remove the Bag Pipes, whip off the Aux Belt, proper clean around the Block ready to fit new WP, job done, watch your fingers when putting Aux Belt back.  ;)

Thanks Guys
just back from trying to get a pump . No Joy . . .even ECP although they were open until 4 pm, not in stock  :'( :'(

So . . . do I risk  going to the meet tomorrow ?  Just done 38 miles & header tank needed about half a pint.   Leak is not as bad as I first thought . .. but still a leak & it won't be getting better.

Bit worried about getting caught in traffic coming back . Going to mull it over for a couple of hours  . . . then decide ::)

No, not unless its really local, it will get worse and then just start dropping coolant all over the place, your be stopping every 10 mins to refill with cold water which is not a good idea.

Get a lift Al.

Chris , you have just confirmed what I also know is the sensible decision on this . As much as I want to go to the Kent meet in the morning  . . . it could all end in disaster if the pump fails big time .

No chance of a lift as no one from this locality going AFAIK

Bugger . . .was looking forward to that as well.

I'll pick a pump up in the week & do it next weekend  as don't use the car week days

Thanks for advice   :y :y :y

It will get worse Al, could be 10 mins could be 100 miles, who knows, last thing you wont is to over heat a V6 without coolant by talking your eye of the ball or not being able to stop safely somewhere, your end up stuffing the Engine.

Replaced mine couple weeks ago.  Pump was £20 from ecp, with 30% off.

Had been rumbling for about a month then let go, was a genuine GM pump, had done 20k >:(. So I thought £20 for new was good enough, also repacked aux-pulley.

You don't want to overheat any modern engine. They're a lot more delicate than old over-head, valve cast-iron engines.

Angry at what has happened here >:( >:( >:( >:(
Ok as said went to ECP in Southend yesterday afternoon as said. Pump not in stock. Quote from me to ECP employee serving me . . . . ."Damn !  wanted to do it this weekend" . . .  now you would have thought that he would have looked & told me Basildon have one in stock & they NOW open on Sundays 10am-4pm
Would not have helped me getting to the Kent meeting today   . . but still poor customer relations IMO . . >:( >:(    Rant over ;)
