My home seaside town spending rate payers money.
« on: 02 January 2017, 14:40:28 »

Couldn't help but smile when I saw the Scarborough townsfolk up in arms. The council want to use at least £4million of taxpayers money to demolish the defunct Futurist cinema/theatre and then rent the site for one off payment of £1million for a 250 year lease to a developer who wants to install a rollercoaster. Whatever happened to the developer paying all the costs or the town hall using the site for better purposes and bringing cash each year into the coffers?  It is a big building - seats 2,100 with every seat having an unobstructed view of the stage. The Beatles performed there twice in my youth.

If you don't like it, either bombard your local Councillors with demands and questions, or stand for election in May 201?

Gordon McRuin imposed Business Rates on empty commercial property, so leaving empty is no longer a viable option. More suitable buildings are converted into flats in high property demand areas or alternatively if they can't be rented or leased they are demolished.

I remember looking at the Futurist theatre last time I was in Scarborough (last summer) and thinking it would make a lovely refurb if there was a market for a theatre venue in Scarborough.  Trouble is there isn't much of a market for anything in Scarborough anymore..

Eh? I think I saw you laying rubber in some 600bhp /ton open topped job passing the Futurist. I'll have you know it is the capital of Gods own Country, centre of the Theatrical world with Alan Bennets plays premiering there before going on to lower places like London.  ;D

;D I haven't driven down the seafront in Scarborough in a while.. actually, that's a lie, last time we were there I parked out on the pier (and then walked down to the south end of the beach) :)
