Still can't bring myself to do it -
« on: 25 July 2008, 12:56:14 »

--Buy another petrol Omega in the current economic climate. A pal of mine in the trade has a V reg 2.5 V6 CD estate on his pitch as a PX to clear, well tested, couple of scuffs here and there, nothing too bad, 2 months tax, 120k, bright red, non metallic, manual. He has it up for £1000, but will take an offer. I borrowed it for a couple of days and it seems a good one. However, put £20 of petrol in it and it barely wets the sides of the tank, 90 miles later the light is back on. I seriously could not afford to run it, nice car but I'm back with the Rover derv for now.

Buy it and fit LPG... Around £700 and a bit of time DIYing and you've got a big car to run at the economy of the Rover Derv (pound for pound!)

Gave it some thought but I work a 6 day week and cannot find the time or energy to do it myself. In my opinion the lpg route is worthwhile on a newer car but not on one which is 8 years old and has done over 100k. In reality the kit is worth more than the car.

over 100k and solid red manual? This sounds like an ex service car of some sort. Have you had a look at the V5? Possibly police/fire or NI import?

Not heard that place mentioned for a while, My granny lived in Langley Park and I had an Auntie up there.  I just remember it all with the red pavements from all the tears of mining.

£20 does not buy you much fuel (under 4 gallons) for many cars now and if using just around town the 90 miles you got was good if you consider the light on the 2.5 V6 usually comes on when you have still got petrol in the tank for another 51 miles at least.

If using the Omega on long journeys, and being driven economically (which I do occassionally) then up to about 35 mpg can be achieved.  The Omega  is though a big, heavy, but (especially the CDX and Elite models)luxuriously fitted out car, which to me is worth every penny I have to spend on running it, and I am on a greatly reduced budget! ;)

Remember the Rover is now an out of vogue car, falling in value as parts are drying up as I understand from people who seem to be in the know. :(

Obviously it is everyone to decide themselves what they prefere, but I personally would always champion large Vauxhalls like the Omega, and still the Senator, over the Rover, and therefore would recommend a good example of the Omega to you. :y :y

So would I lizzie, but my wages have fallen dramatically recently, I sell cars, and no-one is buying, so I have to cut my cloth accordingly. I would rather have aMig any day, but at present it is a luxury I cannot afford. The Rover for all its faults runs on fresh air, even on my short daily journeys it is averaging 38mpg and on my trip abroad it did 54mpg with a roof box on. Unfortunately for me I depend on commission and have to generate money, I don't have the luxury of a guaranteed salary.

In Chester-le-street we have the new Riverside cricket ground which is in a magnificent setting, just need a magnificent cricket team to go with it. Not much else I'm afraid.
Langley Park has had a bit of news coverage recently, its where Sir Bobby Robson was born and his fund raising activities have been featured quite heavily locally. No pits now, just grass and new houses.

Yes, the North East is so very very different from 20 years ago.
