My vehicle health check... not happy
« on: 12 August 2008, 18:31:49 »

took my mig in today for a cam kit, belt and poly vee belt change. went with out a glitch and got the car back after a few hours. they said they would do a health check for me and here's the results...

ALL discs corroding on inner faces (replaced feb 08!)
BOTH front to rear break pipes corroded
BOTH rear metal break pipes corroded
front pads 30%
rear pads 70%
rear diff input shaft seal U/S, leaking diff oil
various engine oil leaks
front lower suspension arm bushes perished
BOTH rear shock absorbers U/S
BOTH rear suspension springs corroding
BOTH rear tyers 2mm tread

you may guess that im not very happy. the bloke in the garage said he could price it up for me but would take him an hour or so and i would probably fall over! told him not to bother! where do i start...

get a tc card, and start getty her back up to scratch.  All fairly simple, except brake lines - I've never done those before

I would be inclined to smear all the brake lines with waxoyl / grease to prevent them getting any worse. The rest sound like relatively common Omega issues and not a disaster, TBH. I would be inclined to see what happens at the next MOT. Might be wotth changing the front bushes and getting the alignment sorted out as this may well ruin a set of tyres if left.

no not yet :-[ and dont know when i will at this rate! with the overheating on LPG i have been keeping a close eye on it. clearing air before i go on long journeys, and going to flush the cooling system when i get the time and money (got stung with the cambelt and tax this month) but seems too be running good at the moment.

Hi,
Most of what youv'e got is fairly usual, not really that bad to do.

Pads and tyres wear anyway. Unless it's the cam cover gaskets, ignore engine oil leaks, unless they're really are bad. As for corrosion on springs, if they ain't broke , don't fix em !!

There's corrosion and corrosion !! I reckon this fella's been looking a bit too hard. Just what is he comparing it to???  Have a look at his car undeneath, and see how corrosion free it is. Is he worried about his?

Although probably the cheapest to fix is the leaking diff pinnion oil seal at £20 odd, however, you do need to remove both centre mufflers to be able to get at it. So potentially expensive if your exhaust falls apart getting it off and back on.

I am in throes of doing pinnion seal, have waited until I also had to fit replacement exhaust system. Maybe just keep diff topped up regular until you need to do same.

i'd be returning to the person who fitted these discs, and sand his face down using the corroded side!

Keep an eye on the springs, they have a tendancy to snap once the rot gets too bad... certainly thats what happened to mine.
Brakes are just running costs, have a brake test, and if thats ok and the brakes are'nt pulling then I would leave them alone for now.
Bushes and shocks will need doing for the MOT.
Check the brake pipes, you might be able to put a joint in and only relace part of it, this was done by an MOT tester on an old Rover I used to have. If its all gone then you really need someone with a ramp so you can feed the pipe through.
To me he has been harsh, but at least once its all sorted you'll have a good car.
Good luck! :y
