The fall out from a robbery
« on: 12 September 2008, 16:44:58 »

I live in a rural community, with just a few local shops, butcher, baker etc, and a small local supermarket.

This week a robbery took place in the local supermarket, where they managed to take the contents of the cash machine dispenser.

Now as a consequence the cash machine has been removed and there will not be another one to replace it due to insurance/security problems.

Now all the local community has no way of drawing out their money, other than a small amount of cashback. This is particularly worrying to the Pensioners, because a lot have their pensions paid into the bank, since the demise of the local Post Office.

It's a worrying trend, where all local amenities, are being withdrawn to the Towns and Cities. Now if you want to take cash out of your account, you have to travel miles to the nearest Town. An awful long distance if you are an aging Pensioner. :( :(

Anyone else share the same problems? :-* :-*

it may actually have a detrimental effect on the shop - so they may change their view - if people can no longer take cash out - they may as well shop elsewhere if they're in town for cash  :-?

We're all supposed to be reducing our carbon footprint and even to sustain the most basic bodily functions now requires a car journey a couple opf times a week.  >:(

(I'm assuming, like me, nipping out to a cashpoint on the bus requires at least a whole day and a rucksack full of Kendal mint cake just in case?)

See as I am currently between engagements, I decided to apply for my National Bus Pass.  It will save me having to pay £1.60 for five minutes parking when I go to the Jobcentre to sign on every two weeks.

I hate buses.   :( :( :(

Our butcher and baker are the same, we have a small shop / post office. You can withdraw money at the post office, but not with an HSBC card, guess who I bank with ::)
not much of a problem for me, I work in town though tend to use Morrisons for cash, it has a mini HSBC bank and cash machines.
It is the elderly people, if out post office was to go, it would be a major difficulty for those without a car, buses are few and far between.

My M-I-L has the same problem - except due to her nerves, she can't take the bus as all the crashing and banging/sudden movments makes her ill.  She has to pay £7.50 each way into town (3 miles each way) for anything.

I take her shopping every week or two, plus escort her to the cash machine - but she's wary of them due to the amount of card cloning locally thats been going on of late.

She only moved to her new place a few years ago as it was nearer the post office..guess what happened barely months afterwards?  Yep - no more post office.

Result, Mr. Blair..your legacy lives on.  Only he could get a job trying to fix all the cr@p he left in the Middle East when he was in office..

Aye, business opportunity there. We'll need one of those when the Electricity supply infrastructure collapses due to lack of investment.

its a bit sad thats happened really, i would feel sorry for anyone to have to travel further afield on public transport.
i went up our local town on a bus (cos some of the town carparks were closed due to a festival) and not wishing to sound like a snob -it was disgusting.
the woman behind me was deep in conversation on the mobile talking about how kerry gave steve crabs and she's so skint she cannot afford to get her baby some milk powder but gagging for a fag and its better to buy them in 200s !
someone was moaning cos they had sat on some gum,  two young chavs were talking about a fight last week mainly swear words and not much else.
and to cap the experience a kid was sick on one of the seats and the parent didnt even let the driver know on the way out! :P

Yep - sounds just like the last bus journey I took from the village to the local town.  I was absolutely appalled at the constant stream of foul language issuing at maximum volume from the scruffy spotty Herberts lounging untidily across the seats in the rear of the bus.

That was several years ago.  Since then, on the two occasions I have decided to take the bus, it didn't turn up, and I had to go back home and get the car.

You statred something there Dusty :y It's the easy option to close things on economic grounds. Service these days is getting away with as little as possible and charging as much as possible, this includes the brown jock and the purple armada in thier bowler hats or businesses. Totaly agree with the bus issue all the drivers around my way drive like they are all late and attempt to corner on two wheels whilst braking as late as possible. This results in an array of what you normally find on the outside of the vehicle's front window now on the inside (except in a human form) Don't like buses! Mmmm thanks for letting me get that off my chest :D
