Transmission Stand
« on: 23 September 2008, 15:51:57 »

Ive just purchased one of these to hold the AR35

http://www.machinemart.co.uk/images/library/product/large/02/020110455.jpg

after speaking to their tech support saying it would work.  Thing is I can't seem to work out how to support the box onto the adjustable rams,  the way it seems to me is to bolt the box onto the stand, but I can't see any Bolt holes on the box which would support it.  Any pointers or ideas would be much appreciated :exclamation

That looks like an engine stand. I guess no reason why it wouldn't support a gearbox. Each of the 4 arms would need to be bolted to one of the bellhousing bolt holes. They should be adjustable to a point to allow you to adjust their position. Then tighten up the bolts that hold the arms to the backplate of the stand and it should be stable.

It is an engine stand, according to the website it can hold auto boxes as well.  Due to the nature of work to follow which happens to be dreaded thrust washer, the only part of box which can be mounted is the bell housing, which is the 1st part that needs to be removed.  Thanks for the help guys, any ohter ideas keep em coming, otherwise back to the shop it will go :'(

Good point. It won't be that useful for a thrust washer change. You'll need to mount the gearbox vertical, bellhousing up. Maybe there are some bolt holes further down the box you could use but then the box would be too high, IMHO.  :-/

Mindful of Sassenach's warning of dire things if you didn't keep the gearbox upright, I rested the propshat doughnut ontop of a padded breeze block against the front of my sturdy workbench. Then held the body of the upright gearbox in place with a luggage strap around it and through the bench legs.

Not very high tech but it allowed me to get into it and leave it safe in the knowledge it wasn't going to fall over. If I was doing another then I would screw a couple of brackets to the front of the workbench to hold it even more securely.

I don't know what the professionals use.
