Key Cutting
« on: 08 October 2008, 14:01:15 »

Took my blank facelift style key to several places in London today, asking to have it cut to match my car key.

Responce was "ohhh no sorry mate, need a special machine for that one"

One place said i had to go to Vauxhall  :-/

I am sure people here have had keys cut?

I've had them cut by a stealer. It worked on the 2nd attempt too. :y

Fortunately they supplied the blank so they got to pay for the failed one.

Don't remember it being that expensive. 20 odd quid IIRC for a horseshoe key with transponder but excluding pairing it, of course. :y

I believe they had 2 options. One was to cut it using my key as a template. The other was to order one ready-cut it based on the car pass info. They mentioned that if they couldn't get it to work by cutting they would have to order one.

key cutting was always a nightmare as it was effectively a milling machine....if the key you were copying was too worn there was a good possibility of it not working....

the other scenario was that the tumblers were so worn a key cut to number would not work either, the keys seem to wear with the brass tumblers

I took mine to a local place but they said their chuck wasn't big enough to hold the blank & could I go to their other branch across town. I did & they cut it no probs  :)

Had one cut in my local timpsons, worked in ignition but not unlocking the doors, they didn't charge me though they said if it don't work we won't charge.

You can order the horseshoe key (with immob chip) ready cut to your car, by asking vauxhall, just need your car pass key number.

Jaime can do the rest for you

I have tried 2 places near work (MK). One said he wouldn't do it unless he provided the blank.  Another said no probs, and has cut a few for me :)

Seeing as I can get cheap blanks, and have tech2, you know what options I use ::)
