never on a Sunday
« on: 02 November 2008, 21:26:15 »

Got up this morning looking forward to fixing my smelly mig. (turn heaters on and stinks of oil) Armed with r/c gaskets and everything else. Proceed to dismantle, 10 mins into job and daughter asks for lift to work as she is late. >:( Took her to work. Returned and got started again, 10 mins later wife asks me to take grandson home and do a bit of shopping at local store. >:(. gto back to work ;D. started to use 3/8 ratchet which I bought from Halfords Yesterday. wouldnt fit the sockets. had to use my old worn one. Finally got plenumn off and was astounded.....no leaks :-/ checked breathers, found to be reletively clean (gave them the once over though). Well I decided at that point not to mess about and replace plugs whilst I was that far down. oops 1st plug I got to.......plughole filled with oil, in fact all 6 were as bad must have been about 1/2 ltre of oil in total. Spent ages cleaning the oil out >:( Seems who ever did the gaskets didnt do the plugs. (Ive just bought car you see). ah well thought Great at least I found what the burning oil was. Ok lets start the rebuild. Checked all around and could remember where everything went, all bolts etc present. Knew where all the hoses went. oops why have I got an extra hose???? :-[ couldnt remember taking 2 hoses off the back of engine and worst of all there was only 1 connection for a hose to go. Looked up mr Haynes, no good, book useless no pics, looked up how to. no piccys showing. posted fellow ooffers and tried to describe predicament, got conflicting answers prbably due to the inept description I gave them. so it was in for a penny, toss of a coin etc. And fitted the hose I thought I took off.rest of rebuild went ok.Cold, tired, hungry and cheesed off, but car started 1st time (you should have seen the oil burnt smoke at rear (where oil from plugholes went into cylinders) couldnt see the other end of street, cleared in mins tho. took it a run and performance was better. felt a bit chuffed until I remembered about the other hose. now where does that go?????. Now I am bricking it as I have to do about 6/700 mls this week and am a bit concerned the bugger will break down :( I am also concerned that I might have to do this again quite soon if whoever repaired it previously hasnt used genuine parts.

Can we assume your car is an auto? If so, your extra hose is the auto bear box breather ...... it doesn't fit on anything!  :y   :y

That loose hose is the auto-box breather, should be clipped up out of the way, just check it comes from the box :y

EDIT: just beat me LOL

Sorry guys its a manual.2.5v6. the hose comes from the passenger side intake hose which has 2 branches (1 goes to idle speed control valve) the other goes towards back of engine is long, at the end it goes at a right angle and then just like an elbow. The other pipe is attached to a valve behind the plenumn and is shaped like a horshoe.

Well done on your service. Did you do the breathers at the same time?. I think they getting blocked is what causes the cam cover gaskets to go in the first place, so if they'r still blocked  you will have to do it all again :'( :'( :'(

Have you see MarkDTM's guide http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1152564281  ?

Cheers Ken
