So, a message to all of you that are nervous about doing mechanical work on your car - go ahead and do it!
Over the weekend I managed to change the cambelt, cam cover gaskets and clean the breathers out with little previous knowledge. This was thanks to the clear and simple guides on this forum and the cambelt DVD, which made the job incredibly easy!
Also, thanks to the guys on the forum who answered my questions about cam alignment and breather sealing quickly, and I avoided sitting outside in the cold too long. All i have to do now is wait for autovaux to send me the breather bridge and plenum seals and the job is complete.
Now, a warning: over the weekend, whilst working, I managed to cut my arm. As usual, I dismissed it as a scratch (it barely was), and tried to clean it out in the evenings.
This morning it had swollen a bit, and started to hurt - NHS Direct told me to get to the doctors, who prescribed antibiotics and bed rest for a week! the doctor told me sternly that I was lucky to avoid blood poisoning.

So - follow the guides on here, and KEEP YOURSELF COVERED AND CLEAN. if you get a scratch, however minor it may be, make sure you clean and disinfect it immediately. My hands were fine - £1.50 for 5 pairs of latex gloves from tescos kept them clean - but my arms were uncovered, and hence scratched and dirty.
Here ends the sermon - now I'm back to bed. Good job the seals will take 3 days to get to me, i'm in no shape to do the work or drive the car anyway.

EDIT: More specific thanks to: Marks DTM, ngrainqey, dbug, chrisgixer and Omega6pot. All of your advice really helped. Thanks!
