Racist, no that's one thing i'm not. I have a friend that is Polish, i helped him get a mortgage & he works hard, his wife & lad are here too & they're very happy. My gripe is with the government for not putting a cap on how many we allow in, other european countries have done this. We should have conditions in place that state when times are as they are now if you don't have ties to this country you must go back. How much does it cost a week for me to be unemployed? They pay my coucil tax, JSA, my mortgage is paid by an insurance company & then there's all the behind the scenes costs. If a migrant worker is out of a job, he/she doesn't get any of this, it's either work or get nothing. This is my point.
immigrants actually contribute in tax a lot more than they cost the government, and as has previously been stated by Holy Count, they take jobs that for some reason brits don't want - with the upcoming recession, you'll see a lot of migrant workers leaving anyway.
i've never seen the argument that "they come over here and take our jobs" no they don't, generally they either take jobs its proven we don't want, create jobs, or do a better job for less money - i thought all you right wing loonies were into your free market capitalist approach? 
When i worked for my previous employer we had alot of migrant workers. Most, not all, but most save up a high percentage their wages over a few months & then sent or took it home with them. So we are talking millions a year being taken out of our economy, how is this good for the economy?
?Back to the original question & part of your response, yes they may well do jobs that we don't want to do, so we make the long term unemployed take these jobs & contribute to the economy instead of draining it. When the shit hits the fan we all duck, but who put the shit there in the first place
I can see where you are coming from on that point Pete, but just think deeper about what you are saying.
All of us are entitled to do what we want with our money, including those with relatives in other countries. Let's face it do any of us worry about buying "foreign" goods (if that is clear cut anyway in this globalised world we live in?!
) with our money, like German motor cars or washing appliances, or French made cars and glassware, or even the basic petrol we put into our tanks, and of course the "foreign" holiday?!
When we do that BILLIONS, not just a few million, are going to people outside our country and therefore our economy!
The days of all of us "Buying British" and keeping our money 100% circulating in our economy (which never actually happened!), providing British people with British jobs is well past.
But conversely our economy earns TRILLIONS by way of "foreign" investors pouring money (well they were!!
) into our economy through our financial services and banking industry, let alone to create and run factories in Great Britain.
So let's put everything into some perspective; global trade is precisely that and it is just plainly madness to think in the pre-WWII mindset of "only for the British Empire".
We the British, created by at least 2,000 years of immigration, and migration, are part of the world and must remain so to
survive.
Where would we be now if the USA, Japan, China, etc., all had an isolationist policy and bought nothing from any other industrial country especially the UK? We would be as bankrupt as we were at the end of 1945, waiting to be bailed out by the Americans!
We must trade with the rest of the world and except a proportion of migration of the world's people's; it is healthy and can bring this country a lot of skills and trade that we must have.
Yes, there must be some controls as we have only so much space available, but what makes us think that everyone, if they can, want to come to Britain? How arrogant and patently wrong is that!
