Just checked and yes, 7xx and 9xx saloons were IRS, estates were live axle.

Agreed. Not a patch on the Omega, a rehash of a pretty tired early '70's design.

On several occasions our example had collisions that would have killed most cars, though. Not only did they not kill it, I don't recall it actually being damaged.

One accident involved sliding on black ice and hitting a metal signpost with sufficient force to bend the pole over at 45 degrees. The other involved shunting a Mk 3 Escort hard enough to halve the capacity of its' boot.

Try that in an 850 / V70 (or an Omega, for that matter).

Kevin

EDIT: Oh, and the PRV V6. What a delight that was. :-X

I used to have a N-reg 960 estate 2.5 GLS - absolutely smashing car.  It had a straight six motor developing about 170bhp iirc.  It wasn't quite the last of the true Volvos - there was a V90 which was virtually the same thing.  It came out the following year, but was discontinued after a few months.

Good points - even more comfortable than my Elite, very good cruiser, enormous load space.

Bad points - diabolical fuel consumption, wouldn't go anywhere in snow.

Big mistake to sell it, especially as I bought a Mondeo diesel as a replacement.
