Your own OOF webspace
« on: 15 February 2009, 12:51:10 »

This was banded about a few month ago, looking at getting it finalised.

Initially, we will only make the offer to those with more than 1000 posts - we may lower this restriction if it works well.

URL for your space would be oof_forum_name.omegaowners.com

There are a few rules:
Nothing illegal! If we are informed of anything illegal, we will ask you to remove it. If you don't, we will close the account.
If your site uses excessive resources (should only be an issue if you have large dynamic sites), we may have to temporarily shut the site down until you have fixed your resource issue.
We do not guarantee uptime - it will be similar to our images server.
Upload access will be via FTP.
Linux based - so no .asp or .aspx type frameworks.

Being completely ignorant of this kind of IT stuff, what exactly are the advantages of having your own web space?  :-?

What do you do with it? :-?

Ive got to ask the obvious, apart from having an email address @omegaowners.com there is nothing else worth paying for that we cant get elsewhere for free. photobucket etc take care of the photo aspects, most isp's already give away a fairly adequate size of webspace to use for files/pics/music as part of the cable or broadband package.

I personally couldnt justify subscribing to a service such as this.

sorry  :-/

Well it is nice to have non ISP and non advert ridden web space - I was on Onetel year ago (ISDN) not baaad web space - but kept failing, then moved to BT broadband - their web space is rubbish and sadvert laden.

As to email - well worth it as it is off shore outside of the nuthouse tracking system.

Valid point. Depends what you want.  Your ISP - if it provides space (many don't now) - space may be enough for simple sites. Unlikely you'll get more than the most basic features (ie pure html) from your ISP.  Even basic sites are more manageable with dynamic features - even very simple sites like http://theboy.omegaowners.com benefit, in that case it makes use of SSIs to make it easily managed.

It certainly isn't for everyone - there's lots of choice out there for varying amounts of money, everyone has the right to pick and choose whats good for them.
