A few shots of the little job on Sunday.
« on: 21 April 2009, 10:24:53 »

Here are a couple of pics of the little job I was doing on a Class 47 on Sunday.

These units have oil and filth everywhere (BR were not exactly great at maintenance and Sulzers have a habit of 'bleeding') so there is a good inch of crudd all across the bed plate!

And yes, the big box in the back of the picture is the diesel tank!

Evacuator output

Connections to the chassis pipe work post air filter

Air filter and valve seup which is hung from the roof, the large tank in the rear is one of the fuel tanks.

Note the use of rubber hoses to effectively disconnect the vac pumps (which are mounted on cush mounts) from the pipe work.

These shots were actually taken inside 47765 (which belongs to Mark Fowler) and were used so we could work out which bits in the large pile of iitems we had, went where!

The loco we are working on is 47292 which is also having a re-paint into BR blue with the large crows foot on the side.

Indeed it is.

To the left of it in the shot is the class 25 (RAT).

Its being re-painted as freightliner are not willing to allow it to remain in thier colours whilst in preservation.

If you look at the photo, where the side door is open is the engine and generator section (takes up about 1/3rd of the train, to the right between the engine and rear cab is the area that contains the ancillaries such as steam heat (if fitted), train electrical suply (if fitted) with the electrical cabinets snadwiched between the generator and ancillaries.

To the left of the engine is the plant room. This is where I have been working which has 2 air compressors for air braking etc, 2 evacuators for vac braking, a triple pump for cooling and oil circultaion etc, a traction motor blower (for cooling) plus a few other odds and ends.

No fancy electronics on this unit, its all contactors and resistors!

Here is some images of the guts (engine and alternator) whilst running (it would have been bloody loud in there!)

That unit is basicaly 2 straight six diesel engines bolted side by side so hence 2 crank shafts and a lay shaft in between that couples them together.

Its not specifically locos.

I enjoy engineering and like to do some voluntary work to put something back into the community.

There is a heritage center 2 miles from home with 7+miles of old main line track (and a spur to the midland mainline), a bus group, a loco group, miniature railway etc.

So I just popped down and asked if I could get involved (1 night a week plus some occasionally weekend work).

Thursday night I will be welding a new rear chassis member onto a (typically rotten) land rover!

So its pretty varied!
