Rear-ender
« on: 01 July 2009, 15:17:52 »

Some bright spark has shattered my shiny, almost un-marked rear bumper this morning.  Loads of verbal from her.  Saying I indicated late and 'was going too slowly'.  As you do when you're turning right!  She tried an overtake and when I saw her I stopped but instead of completing the lunatic move, she piled into the back of me.
Details she gave are looking iffy too at present.

Not happy.  >:(

That's bad news Chris, you'll need all the evidence you can muster to prevent future difficulty with this one.

She sounds potentially difficult and it's not beyond the bounds of possibility that she'll be making various allegations after consulting the barrack-room lawer.

Hope you're not injured.

Police and insurance companies work on the basis that the person who runs into the back of you is the one at fault. ;) ;)

Yes. I agree. But there were no witnesses apart from one passenger in each car and I have a suspicion that she might not be insured.
Police follow-up of uninsured drivers is lamentable in my personal experience.  It involves writing to the registered keeper twice and dropping it if they don't respond, with a letter to me saying they've made "extensive enquiries".  "We're civilians so we don't have police powers"; but they still write on MetPol headed notepaper.

Where's the smiley with a thumbs down?

Is there any CCTV covering the scene Chris? That may help, especially if you do have to make a formal complaint to the police.  Regardless of past experience, I would still start that process off once you know this women is not legit. ;) ;)

Agree with lizzie, plus I would add the point that that is what your insurance company is there for, they will soon suss out if the other driver was insured or not, and if not being the case will proceed with legal proceedings to cover the cost of the accident.

The Insurer sounded so much like the Police interaction I described above that I had little enthusiasm for their chances of getting anywhere.  I had to tell them what I expected from them (having paid for legal cover etc.) and the list of things they thought they could not do was pretty lengthy!  :(

Ordinarily you have no legal right to use this site to check if a vehicle not owned by you is insured, "without reasonable cause"

I'm suitably cheered by your misfortune Bertie! ;)

For everyone's information, when the rear parking sensors fall out, they bounce on the road and ping up and knock the bumper.  A bit like that game, Jacquari, that we used to play on the beach! :D
