Took over responsibility for major works, there will be some fallout from this, and it will be interesting to see what happens once the investigation is finished....block totally evacuated, and closed off, police are still investigating................I don't know of any simliar incident where loss of life in a block of flats has occured for some time now, and very sad that three young children have died.

I have heard (rumour) that it may have been intentionally started by some teenagers. Also that due to the hot weather  curtains were hanging out of windows and subsequently caught fire, which helped the fire spread into individual flats.

Given there has been loss of life they will investigate, which is what you would expect. The probe and it's outcome will potentially have wider implications not just in Southwark but across England depending on the outcome and recommendations.

The fire brigade's ladder only goes up to seven floors , why when there are so many high rise tower blocks in the area ......don't know if there are ladders that go higher :-?

Absolutely, but they don't need to spend one single penny to realise that the '3 P's' applied where the fire escape was concerned.

Many years ago I stayed with a mate for a few days on the Winstanley Estate (Clapham Junction).
Even back then I knew that if a fire were to start, we'd be well & truly f**ked on the 19th floor.

Yes I heard this, why no fire escapes, :question may have avoided such a loss of life.  However I do not know enough to speculate. Just such a Sad situation, hopefully a one off as a result of a combination of contributing issues.

In the media it has been reported that one problem with this particular design is that there is only one staircase / lift core for the  whole building.  Apparently this stopped many people from being able to evacuate the block, unlike the flats I have known were there are two sets of stairs either end of the building.

This is of course only what the media have reported, but it is one of the issues the investigation is looking into apparently.

Exactly how the Winstanley (and many other South London council estates) were designed at the time.

Depending on how you view it, it's simply sheer luck there hasn't been a tragedy before now.

Yes there is another block exactly the same, However, as Killer mentioned there are quite a few other blocks around with similar construction, some do have fire escape's built into the construction but again leading to a central stairwell, and the fire escape routes only work as long as folk don't clog them up with their belongings ......adding to the fire risk and potentially preventing escape .....

For the moment my involvement is nil, as it is a Housing Management issue at the moment, should any works be carried out, it may well be under day to day repairs and maintenance and not come my way at all. I think they will have problem's moving residents back inot the block, as they won't want to go back, so it could well be demolished, if they don't do refurbish and improve the block
