I have always wondered if out of all the police vehicles disposed of, have any ever been sold that still have lights and sirens still fitted. My dad once bought an old Dennis Fire Engine that still had the blue lights fitted, but was a bell on with a turn handle, days before sirens.
Maybe Josh has the answer.

Blues lights, strobes, siren and twin tones are all easy enough to buy anyway....

Many former Fire and Ambulance service vehicles do still have lights, sirens and markings.
I have not known any police vehicles to have any operational lights or sirens still fitted. Some still have part of the rear chevron markings, and some vans still have the rear cages. But it would cause great embarrasment to the relevant force if any vehicle was released with lights or siren.

I think you can, as long as the word P O L I C E has been removed, all the battenburg can still be on the car, as can the strobe lights, but must NOT be used. I also believe that when making tv programmes like The Bill etc, any scene involving a police chase is allowed to use blue lights, but any sirens must be dubbed in afterwards.

If we take an Omega saloon in livery for reference;
Front- Police and if applicable force crest marking must be covered.
Side- Again, police and force crest markings must be covered, but battenburg or other livery is permitted
Rear- 'NOT IN SERVICE' should be displayed, and if applicable police wording covered.
Roof- Light bar must be fully covered, and fuses that operate it must be taken out, same for siren.
Air ID codes, some confusuion here, forces recommend they should be covered, so any aerial observers are not confused.
It is an offence to operate a vehicle with a blue light, whether it's covered or not. However, if you have shown you have covered it and taken all reasonable measures, it's 99% of the time fine.
At some point I intend to operate a TVP Omega on a '03' plate or later for the pupouses of shows.
However, it can't be used as a noraml car to potter about in, so it wouls be purely a show vehicle. No trips down to the local Sainsbury's

I wouldn't want a car that looks like that... The police would constantly be watching in case you did anything that remotely resembles impersonation (and rightly so IMO)

I wouldn't want a car that looks like that... The police would constantly be watching in case you did anything that remotely resembles impersonation (and rightly so IMO)

Strobes and a siren on my old Volvo was great of course only ever used on private land

i remember when i was about 13 and a mate of mi dads bought an ex police senator i thought the strobes were cool(and the car)
