Dartford rant
« on: 15 July 2007, 10:00:13 »

OK, it has been said before (er... by me), and I'll say it again, if we say it often enough it might just start echoing around and eventually someone at the government will pick this up:

The hour-long queue of cars, vans, and lorries at the toll booths at the Dartford Crossing during rush hour generates congestion, pollution, CO2 emissions, and fuel waste. In the interest of saving the planet please raise the barriers and let traffic flow, we know you need the money but you can't sell our clean air for pennies. (And yes, I heard the official version that the booths are there to avoid congestion and queuing inside the tunnel, but Blackwall Tunnel has no toll boots, only a red light that stops traffic from entering when the tunnel is congested, and it is green at all other times.)

There, I said it....

Now you have touched on a subject that bloody well annoys me. When construction of the Queen Elizabeth Bridge at Dartford commenced back at the end of the 1980’s it was agreed in order to pay for the construction costs the tolls would be implemented for an anticipated period of 15 years. Once the construction costs had been repaid the tolls would be removed. The bridge opened in 1991 and the costs were actually paid back a few years ago early due to the far heavier then expected traffic levels (imagine our surprise at that). However it has been decided by our wonderful New Labour Government to continue with the tolls in breach of the original agreement in order to use the money for good causes, whatever that means to our sleazy lying politicians.
This of course was carried out by “Statutory Instrument” avoiding any change to the original Act of Parliament and obviously preventing the possibility of anybody having the opportunity to object. The next time your sitting in a very long queue in the artificially manufactured congestion pinch point remember it is for good causes and its for your own good (notwithstanding the numerous accidents they’ve had with trucks coming off the steep incline from the bridge and ploughing into the back of the toll queue).

You’ll be delighted to know that that other much admired London public body “Transport for London” has plans to introduce a toll on the Blackwall Tunnel as soon as it possibly can (also for your own good of course) and has recently abandoned the tidal flow system at rush hour introduced 29 years ago also (for your own good obviously) on the grounds of safety. Funny how its taken 29 years for someone to declare this system unsafe. End result congestion chaos every morning on the A2.
By the way TFL have a nice little revenue earning speed camera at the Blackwall Tunnel which will fine you £100 for exceeding the Tunnel 30 mph limit. The good news is because it does not comply with the national ACPO guidelines on Camera sites they can not endorse your driving licence but will happily accept your £100 in lieu. This is of course entirely 100 percent for safety reasons and nothing to do whatsoever with raising cash for Ken Livingstones expanding municipal empire.

Isn’t life in modern socialist Britain just wonderful? God Save the Queen (what ever that means to anybody anymore).  :y :y
