Checked my tyre pressures today.....

One ok at 30psi

One was at 27psi

Other two were 25 psi

All nicely blown upto 30psi now.....40mpg here i come

I'll have to make a video next time of me re-setting the fuel gauge, then cruising @ 75 for 50 miles and show the result!

I usually put mine at 31 though, the book says 30.5 so i round it up.

Not using cruise control, and not hoofing it up hills, i easily get 40 on a motorway run @ 75mph...

Not using cruise control, and not hoofing it up hills, i easily get 40 on a motorway run @ 75mph...

My 3.0 Auto Elite with 225 tires will get 32+ on cruise at 80, as much as 35 doing what you describe.  The problem is that if I don't do any motorway I get 24 between fillups    One of the main reasons is that it runs insanely rich during warmup.    On short trips it is in warmup half the time and just gulps fuel.

Just been out today with a fresh tank of expensive BP Ultimate for a treat - 27 mpg at 75 ! I normally get 34 with this stuff in but need to clean breathers & fix emissions fault first I suppose.

I did get 40 mpg once - took a pic on my phone for prosperity - never repeated since.

Also petrol is about 7ppl cheaper than diesel at the moment! - Its taken the benefit right out of having an oil burner

Will have to follow AA's howto on doing the breathers.....and see if that makes a difference....havent done it yet....coz since he posted the howto is been blinking cold out  

I fixed one of my veccies the other morning at 8am.....0c ....boy was i glad the engine was hot to keep my fingers from freezing

Whats yours like on start-up....does it fire first turn or does it need a couple of goes? Is it better if you open the throttle slightly?

Reason I ask is that I think I have an incontinent injector which leaks fuel into the intake after switch-off, its then too rich on start-up next time and fuel consumption is far too high on short runs but OK on longer runs. I have another injector assy to fit when I get time so will see if my theory is correct.

Fires right up.  There is no clear sign of anything mecahnically wrong.  Even after 300 miles, no matter how gently I drive my avg mpg drops steadily for the first few minutes of driving.  (It would not be shown in the MID if leaking injector.)  It continues a bit past when the engine temp comes up, assuming that is not a delayed reaction then the auto tranny and tires may be part of the  problem when cold.  I think it is fundamentally a tuning issue of too much cold start enrichment, with a possible cold tranny issue on top.
