TD Viscous fan
« on: 04 July 2007, 22:28:04 »

Assuming I keep a real good eye on temp, esp in traffic, is it OK to run my tractor without its viscous fan?

One of the reasons postulated by the Mechanic who maintains my TD for the overheating problems that I was having was that the viscous fan was faulty
We replaced it & it made no difference to the problem that eventually proved to be a combination of a seized Intercooler fan & a radiator full of muck/ leaves/ dead insects etc.
The Mechanic has a TD as well & he did have a Viscous fan failure which resulted in an over-heating problem which is why he initially suggested this as the cause of my troubles, which gives credance to that fact that it is essential to have it working correctly

OK, ta.

Bearing in mind, that when moving, the viccy fan isn't really doing anything (airflow alone is more effective), its only 'in traffic' situations that could be problematic.

Since last weekend, I have been running with my (seized) viccy fan in the boot ::), and the electric fans control in traffic temp easily.

Obviously, the car is much quieter without the constant howl of a seized viccy fan, but also much more responsive - its amazing how much power the fan saps when running (all the time in my case)

Did you solve your earlier overheating problem (suspected blocked radiator)?
If so how?

Overheating seems to be cured....

I did 2 things in between it overheating and now - changed autobox, and put some very strong 'trade only' oil flush through it.

This is after I had changed rad, waterpump, stats, and plenty of coolant flushes.....
