V6 engine problems ?
« on: 09 July 2007, 00:06:52 »

Before we start, I must say that I am installing a V6 into another completely different car..............so my questions might not be the usual kind !

I chose the Omega/Vectra V6 because it is physically quite small and, on paper, fairly powerful for its size, but, having read a fair bit of this forum, it would seem to have a lot of problems ?

I have got both a 2.5 and a 3.0 which had been removed because they made "knocking" and "rattling" noises. I have seen a lot of engines for sale which have supposedly mechanical faults, and I am wondering if this is a particular problem.

What I would like to know at this stage, is..................do they actually have any common known mechanical problems (not getting into electronics just yet) I know about the leaking oil cooler, and the leaking cam covers, but is there anything else ?

Main/big end weakness ?

Head gaskets blowing?

Cam wear ?

Oil pump failure ?

Throwing pistons/con rods ?

You get the idea...........Or is it due to neglected maintainance in a lot of cases.

Main problems are lack of maintenance.

Big ends, head gaskets and oil pump all good. Only known one oil pump problem - mine!

Usual things to attend to are:
Cambelt and tensioners
Water pump
Rocker gaskets
Breathers
crank sensor
DIS pack

I would have thought there'd be plenty of these engines available second hand without the mechanical issues you mention. Although they seem to suffer from a variety of trivial problems (cam cover gaskets, oil coolers, crank sensors, etc.) the majority are, as Ronnie says, brought on by lack of maintenance and easily solved. The engine internals themselves appear to survive well.

Unless you're embarking on a full rebuild before fitting it, I would be inclined to look for a better donor engine, and hear it running before purchase. I think the only engines with (bottom end) knocking issues that we have seen have been due to oil pressure failure, which means that it may have caused a variety of issues and be prohibitively expensive to put right!

By the way, what's the project this engine is destined for?

Cheers,

Kevin
