Strange gearbox leak...
« on: 08 August 2007, 21:18:55 »

Hot on from the wishbone questions there's something else I wanted to ask you guys here regarding the meggy...

Was driving to oxford the other week, everything fine as usual.  Pulled up at a roundabout and white smoke seems to be billowing fiercely from the passenger front wheel area.  Trying to be optimistic, if slightly delusional, I assure the girlfriend that it is simply the exhaust from the car in front - boy he's got a head gasket problem and a half!  The girlfriend, being smart, is convinced it's all from my car and of course she's right!

So i pull up after the roundabout, get out and flip the bonnet expecting flames and/or nastiness but i can't see where it's coming from.  It's also dispersing pretty quickly.  It smells oily - but not engine-oily - and I work out it's coming from underneath just as what was a big plume of smoke has all but stopped.  On inspection the underside of the bellhousing is moist with auto tranny fluid.  What seems to have happenned is the gearbox decided to very suddenly belch out a not-totally-insignificant amount of gearbox fluid from the bellhousing area, most of which landed on the exhaust and became smoke, then seal itself.

All I can do then is continue my journey carefully.  There are no more signs of any smoke, no strange noises or performance from the gearbox, and here i am around 1500 miles later without the slightest hint that anything happenned!

So I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what happenned and if i ought to do anything??  I'm not that bothered really cos like i said it's fixed itself.  But my engineers brain can't rest easy.  A leak like that surely means some kind of mechanical failure, and mechanical failures dont tend to fix themselves.

Any ideas?  Cheers...

Is the autobox breather at the rear of the engine all ok and not blocked/crimped anywhere?

Oooh that sounds a possible culprit.  Where exactly is that mounted?  Visible from under the car or the engine bay (probably not)?

There should be a large ish loose pipe at the rear of the engine, its normaly cable tied to the large breather pipe.
