Cam oil seals
« on: 13 August 2007, 23:43:44 »

Hi there Folks.
After changing the cam cover gasket for the third time, I am wondering if it’s the front cam oil seals that are leaking. If so what are the signs, I would of thought that I would be getting oil all over the sprockets and on the inside of the timing belt cover, but no sign of this, but I have got oil behind and around the cam sensor and a few drips on the plastic tray that bolts under the rad. If it is the cam seals, is this a big job, do I need any special tool etc.
Thanks
Lyn

This may be the oil pressure switch located at the bottom left of the enigine - just changed mine after doing the same as yours.

Hi there Tafty and thanks.
Is this the Oil pressure warning light switch, located at end of the crankshaft, if so, is it the same on a 2.0 as on your 2.6. do I need to drain the oil or remove the sump pan or is it screwed in somewhere.
Appreciate any help
Thanks
Lyn.

If you have oil behind the cam sprockets its likely to have come from the camshaft seals, these seem to develop splits in the sealing edge, especially the pattern ones for some reason.
Other possible cause is blocked drain holes in the cambearing caps due to too much black sealant being used.

Thanks Matchless
I shall have a closer look when the weather improves. I did over fill with oil a few weeks back, so the oil pressure relief valve makes sense and I only get drips on the pan after I’ve been heavy footed
But as for  the oil behind the cam sensor and thereabouts I shall have a better look now I know a bit more.
Many thanks
Lyn.
