96 2.0 16v auto cdx estate,cuts out sometimes after a run when restarting while still warm,when slowing down in traffic and at junctions etc read somewhere on here about the breather but cant find the post now

clean out breather pipes, and clean out the ICV using carb cleaner

I dont know where they are, I got a local garage to do mine cos i'm lazy

cheap, my garage charged me £30 IIRC, which i dont know if its cheap or not for a job like that TBH

i think there might be a "how to" somewhere on the forum to do it yourself if you're handy enough under the bonnet unlike me, in which case it'll cost you the price of the carb cleaner!!

I used to have a Vectra Company Car that did that - was a 2.0 and a 95 plate - never got to the root cause then - was in the dealers god knows how many times.  You learn something new every day on here

Post up any fault codes, tell us what you found on the breather check,
and shout up if you need any more help.

Clean the breathers and idle air valve as suggested.
If your car doesnt have the oil separator (black plastic box at back right of camcover) then get one from the dealer, it can help a lot to reduce oil contamination of the idle valve.

This was a free mod at one time but I know of at least two cars where the dealer didnt offer the mod......could it be that it was a nice little money earner to simply clean the IACV every 6 months instead?

Think they're like gold dust now, had one on order from the dealers for nearly 4 months, cancelled the order in the end.

thanks for the help guys i appear to have the oil seperator ,will get on with it asap work allowing

Then again it is just as easy to replace the IACV which will stop all the cutting out. You must do the breather pipes as well or replace the lot which will solve the problem as well. If the breather pipes are soft and mushy then they will nee replacing. The IACV is costly but in the end it stops all the hassle every 6 months to do the cleaning. Trust me its better this way and pays for itself in the long run.
