Gearbox oli mixed with water = Brown
« on: 28 August 2007, 15:18:54 »

I just what to see what you guys think. This happed before i Joined the forum used to have a Black on Black 3.0 elite loved it the only thing worrg was that evey now and then it would slip out of gear. So what would happen is i would say pull up a a round around and stop with the car still in D thet try to drive away and it would just rev and pull of very slow.
I then had the Gearbox oil changed and all was ok for a few months,

Then one very hot day on the way home from work stoped a around about ane set up pull off and it was jsut reving. Theb the MID showed Gearbox CHECK. Made it round and pulled up looked under the car and there was a Brown Oil coming from what looked like the front of the GearB. Was told that Water may have mixed with the oil? .  How likely would that have been and was there anything that could have been done to fix it.Was told that it would need a repacement BOX :'(   .The odd thing as the when you let it cool down it would drive ok for a time then you would lose drive.

What  do you guy think.

Thanks.

P.S i miss that car  :-[

No great experience of autoboxes but brown oil, especially after a hefty topping up, sounds like its getting severely overheated rather than water.  No real way of getting water in there, I would have thought, unless a prob in the radiator cooler part.  Water coolant pressure greater than autobox pressure.

Would plump for leaking oil and level dropping, loss of drive, oil then overheating as a result.

Most places to me that it would need a new GB and that it could cost 1K +.

It was a great car my 1st 3.0 v6. was not even looking for it just drove pass a car dealers with it out on the forcort Black with Black lether. Took my son for a drive in it a fell in love had it the next week.

ATF, esp burnt atf (as would happen if you had lots of slip), gives a very distinctive smell.

Being a 3.0 with AR35 box, I'd guess thrush washer.  I'd guess the stored fault code in the gearbox was '8 - Incorrect gear ratio'

£15 for a uprated thrust washer....
